The Sulky Santa Cup
July 2007
The Sulky Santa Cup was held at the Murrami Sports Grounds on Sunday 29th July, with another invitation going out to Heavy Horse enthusiasts. The weather on the day was bleak and overcast, but thankfully the rain held off until we had all packed up by mid afternoon.
The Cup has been run over the past three years, with the inaugural cup being won by the host club Murrumbidgee. In the last two years, Riverina had managed to take the cup from the hands of Murrumbidgee members, but the home team was to prevail this time, as the triumphant Murrumbidgee club took the cup back, to level the scores at two all.
Ben Rosetta from Riverina drove his grey pony Ashley to first place in the Gamblers Choice Cones, with Kim Hillyer and Luke Burns, both from Murrumbidgee, coming second and third. Kim drove Energiser to a speedy first place in the Obstacle Challenge with Ben coming second and Luke driving his pony Feldie coming third.
The Long reining cones was taken out by Trevor Brand with Rosie, with Ben and Luke equal second and Emily Stead from Riverina with Bee third.
The heavy horses competed in the Pumpkin Snatch and Log Snig with the following results:
Pumpkin Snatch Paul Brown 1st, Fred Broso 2nd and Michael Jones 3rd.
Log Snig Fred Broso 1st Michael Jones 2nd and Paul Brown 3rd
A canteen was set up with hot food, tea/coffee and cold drinks on offer, and a wonderful job was done by Robyn Schmetzer, Chris Douglas and Lyn Johnson. Robyn made a delicious Chicken/Vegie soup which was the hit of the day, with heaps of people coming back for more. Lyn made her famous vanilla and coconut slice – another hit with the sweet tooths.
We’re hoping for another great event next year. The challenge is out again to the Riverina Club. Go Murrumbidgee !!
